A Guide to Caring for your Leather Bag

by Grace Gordon October 03, 2018

When you buy a beautiful leather bag, you’ll want to keep it looking tip-top and avoid any damage. Very often our customers either want to wear their bags in as quickly as possible or safeguard from signs of age. Ultimately the look of your bag will depend largely on how you treat it but here are a few tips and tricks to help you along the way.

1 - PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE

At the workshop we condition all our bags before they start their new lives with you lovely lot. That being said it’s a good idea to pretreat the leather yourself preventing water and oil sinking into the surface. We recommend a product containing natural waxes and oils like Renapur Leather Balsam, featured in the image above with our Eleanor Tote

2 - AVOID WATER DAMAGE

Whether you’ve been caught in a shower or are just simply accident prone never fear; water damage doesn’t have to mean the end to your bag. To clean off a few droplets just gently wipe the surface of your leather with a clean cloth (I fold my dust bag inside at all times so it’s ready for rain). If however you’ve managed to get it soaked through just leave to dry naturally and shape the interior using paper. If you try and speed up the process (e.g. with a radiator) you may end up drying out & cracking the surface.

3 - HANDBAG MOT

Just like you hair, leather needs a good clean & condition. For ease you can purchase so many great all-rounder leather products which do both jobs perfectly. I recommend Urad Leather cleaner which can be applied gently with a sponge. Doing this thoroughly twice a year should be enough but for a heavier duty clean you can use saddle soap followed by an oil to condition.

4 - USE PROTECTION

One of my favourite tricks for looking after your leather is to make sure any pens/pencils and makeup are safely stored in a little carrier case whilst inside your bag. Ink and oil based stains can be tough to remove so prevent any accidents with a little planning. Our Natural Linen Pouch will do the job just perfectly.

5 - EMBRACE NATURE

A huge part of the charm of leather is its ability to age and wear in over time. You can’t avoid this happening and shouldn’t - that’s the point! If you throw your bag on the dance floor and weigh it down with heavy books then you can expect it to be looking a little older in a few short months. Alternatively if you like your bag pristine then keep it clean, stay away from the floor and don’t scuff with heavy jewellery. Either way embrace your bag in all its glory!

So there's you have it, a few simple steps to ensure your bag stays at it's best for years and years to come. If you'd like any more advice or have any questions don't hesitate to get in touch via our contact page HERE. We'll get back to you as soon as possible and in the meantime you can take a look at our luxury leather collection and choose your next piece today.

TOP TIP: Always test an inconspicuous area with any new cleaning products. Our natural and tan leathers will darken with treatment so you can expect a darker patina.
